The chi square goodness of fit test tests if the observed data fits a certain distribution or not. The chi square test of independence tests if the observed data does not significantly differ than what is expected under the independence assumption. The null hypotheses for the fitness test is that observed data follow the preassumed distribution while for test of independence the null is that the two categorical variables are independent
