Other drugs for mania

Olanzapine and quetiapine are both approved as monotherapy for acute mania.Several antiseizure drugs are used in bipolar disorder. Valproic acid has antimanic effects equivalent to those of lithium and is now often as a first choice in acute illness. Valproic acid may be effective in patients who fail to respond to lithium, and in some instances it has been used in combination with lithium. The antiseizure drugs carbamazepine and lamotrigine are also used both in acute mania and for prophylaxis in the depressive phase.
