QuestionAnswer
What are some points of a Whiplash treatment plan (overall; acute/chronic doesn't matter for this question, just that they have whiplash)? Name 3 treatments.• Hydrotherapy • Massage • Pain free stretches • Stretch shortened muscles • Strengthen weakened muscles
Which is the best for a Whiplash patient during the acute-subacute phase of treatment?: a) Shorter, less frequent treatments b) Shorter, more frequent treatments c) Longer, less frequent treatments d) Longer, more frequent treatmentsb) Shorter, more frequent treatments Regardless, seeing acute/sub-acute patients more often is usually better. The more treatments, the faster they will recover.
If your whiplash patient has seen no improvement in 6 weeks with your current treatment plan, what should you do? See hint for Qebec practitioners. If there is no improvement within previously stated question, client should be referred to another type of therapy. Same answer for QTF.
True or false (contraditions in treating Whiplash): In subacute & chronic stages refer client for medical attention if vertebral artery test positiveTrue. Do not treat, send to a GP, MD or specialist.
True or false (contraditions in treating Whiplash): You should remove protective muscle splinting of acute whiplashFalse. Avoid removing protective muscle splinting of acute whiplash.
True or False: In Whiplash patients, you should help them remove protective muscle spasms.False. Do NOT passively stretch a muscle in spasm for whiplash patients.
True or false: You should only SLIGHTLY and GENTLY stretch cervical muscles in acute/sub-acute whiplash cases, especially when the sternocleidomastoid is involved.True: No extreme stretches of cervical muscles, especially SCM in acute/subacute phase
True or False: in whiplashed areas, spinal stretches should be a little painful.False: Mobilization of spine should NOT be painful
True or False: regardless if acute/subacute/chronic, aggressive techniques will cause symptom flare ups.True, so don't do it.
True or false: Do not bilaterally massage both sternocleidomastoids at same time – compresses carotid arteries, client feel chokedTrue, so don't do it.
True or false: frictions are fine for all whiplash patients, and are especially effective those that have taken anti-inflammatory drugsFALSE: No frictions if taking anti inflammatory meds or blood thinners, at any point.
What is Plantar fasciitis and what causes it?- Plantar fasciitis is most commonly caused by repetitive strain injury to the ligament of the sole of the foot. - Such strain injury can be from excessive running or walking, inadequate foot gear, and jumping injury from landing. Can also be caused by weight gain (pregnancy). It is the most common reason for foot pain in athletes.
What can someone do to prevent plantar fasciitis?- Do not over-train the area, if it can be helped. Take breaks, if possible. - Stretch their plantar fascia, astrocnemius & soleus muscles regularly. - Wear proper footwear - Do not gain excessive weight. If pregnant, stay off feet more.
What is one reason it is important to treat plantar fasciitis, letting it heal completely before more strain, especially for athletes? After an initial period of acute inflammation, chronic inflammation sets in, accompanied by adhesions & fibrosing of the fascia. The plantar fascia thickens with chronic inflammation. With repeated stress a bone spur may develop on medial aspect of calcaneus. Healing is slow as poorly vascularised, so great care must be taken.
For ACUTE plantar fasciitis treatment, which of these points is WRONG? a) Hydrotherapy is warm to affected area b) Reduce edema if present c) Reduce sympathetic nervous system firing & pain d) Treat compensating structuresa) Hydrotherapy SHOULD BE COLD to affected area, to reduce swelling.
For CHRONIC plantar fasciitis treatment, which of these points is WRONG? a) Hydrotherapy deep moist heat prior to stretch. Contrast after, increase local circulation b) Reduce sympathetic nervous system firing & pain c) Treat compensating structures d) Cross fiber frictions should be avoided. e) Mobilize hypomobile ankle jointsd) Cross fiber frictions SHOULD be done, but within the patient's pain tolerance.
