level questions: Corrosion

QuestionAnswer
What exactly is Corrosion?-Corrosion is just when something is Damaged or even Destroyed by Chemicals.
Which Metal can only Rust? How can this Happen?-Rusting can only happen to Iron -Rusting happens when Iron is in Contact with Oxygen and Water, which will make Hydrated Iron [III] Oxide
Show the Equation for the Making of Rust? [Remember Hydrated Iron [III] is a Form of Rust]Iron + Oxygen + Water --> Hydrated Iron [III] Oxide
Why is Rusting Iron a Redox Reaction?-Iron will lose 3 Electrons, when it Reacts with Oxygen, to become an Ion with a 3+ Charge. This is Oxidation -Oxygen will gain 2 Electrons, when it Reacts with Iron, to become an Ion with a 2- Charge. This is Reduction -And a Redox Reaction is when both Oxidation and Reduction is Present.
How does Oil, Grease and Paint slow down Corrosion?-If you Coat the Metal with a Barrier, the Reactants [Oxygen and Water] will be Unable to hit the Metal -Painting is good for Big and Small Structures - and it looks Cool -Oiling and Greasing is used for Moving Things, like Bike Chains and Door Parts.
How can Coating Steal with Tin slow down Corrosion?-Tin Plating is just when Tin Covers the Object -The Tin will be a Barrier, stopping Water and Oxygen hit the Metal -This will ONLY work if the Tin does not Reveal any part of the Metal. If it does, then it'll Corrode.
What exactly is the Sacrificial Method in terms of Corrosion?-Placing a more Reactive Metal with the other Metal that you won't want to Corrode will work because: -The Reactive Metal will react with the Water and Oxygen, instead of the other Metal. -Example may be with Magnesium being Bolted onto Lesser Reactive Metals; since Magnesium wants to lose its Electrons more than the other Metal, it will React with the Oxygen and Water -This is seen in Ship Hulls, or Underground Pipes
What is Galvanising?-This is when ZINC is used to Cover an Iron Object to stop Rusting -Zinc is acting as a Sacrificial Protection, as its more Reactive than Iron and it also acts like a Barrier. Effective -Steel Buckets and Corrugated Iron Roofing are Galvanised
