What does CITES stand for?
Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species
What does CITES appendix I mean?
• Rare and endangered species • Trade will generally not be permitted for primarily commercial purposes. • Special convention export/import permits are required
CITES appendix II?
• Species that are not currently rare or endangered, but could become so if trade is not regulated. • Also includes look-a-like species • Export permits are required. • Appendix II mammals in BC include Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Cougar, Lynx, Bobcat, Wolf, River Otter, Sea Otter
CITES appendix III?
• Species that are not necessarily endangered, but are managed within the listing nation. • An export permit is required if trade is with the listing nation

BC Conservation Data Centre • Track at risk category for species based on their provincial distribution • Risk status based on biology of species (distribution, population size and trend)
What are the 5 pieces of legislation that protect SARs in BC?
• Wildlife Act - Has general protections for all wildlife. Additional protections and penalties for species designated as endangered or threatened under the act. • Forests and Range Practices Act - Requirements for Wildlife Habitat Areas (WHA’s) • Oil and Gas Activities Act - Similar to FRPA protections but for oil and gas activities • Ecological Reserves Act - Provides for establishment of ecological reserves • Park Act - Protection of park resources, including SAR
