What are the 2 types of mixtures?
Heterogeneous-2+ materials that are still visible/cloudy solution/homogeneous-2+ pure substances mix to look like 1
What is archimedes' principle?
Any body completely or partially submerged in a fluid at rest is acted upon by an upward, or buoyant, force, the magnitude of which is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the body.
What is buoyant force?
Particles pushing up on object
How do you classify matter
Matter is either pure substance or a mixture, mixture can be homogeneous/ solution or heterogeneous
What affects solubility?
Agitation, temperature, and surface area
What is compressibility?
Only gas can be compressed, not solids and liquids. gases must be in a sealed container, particles need to have enough space apart to act as a gas, and there needs to ba an external force applied to it
What affects viscosity?
Heat and clumps/thickness
What is buoyancy?
Tendency for materials to rise or float in a fluid
How do you calculate pressure?
Pressure=force/area p=f/a
What is density/average density?
Density-mass per unit of volume for a substance/ crowdedness of particles d=m/v average density-total mass of an object divided by its total volume
Solute vs solvent
Solvent- thing that does the dissolving solute- thing that gets dissolved
What are the properties of the states of matter
Solid-has fixed shape & volume liquid-takes shape of container & fixed volume gas-spreads out, not fixed
What is the definition of flow rate and viscosity?
Viscosity-thickness of a fluid flow rate-amount of fluid that passes a point in a certain amount of time (speed) high viscosity=low flow rate
Methods of seperation
Mechanical, magnetism, flotation, settling, sifting, filtration, dehydration, distillation
What are the changes of states?
Fusion, solidification, evaporation, condensation, sublimation, deposition
What is neutral buoyancy?
The object has the same density as water so it stays suspended in the water
What is pneumatics?
Gases used to move objects with pressure
Particle model of matter
All matter is made up of tiny particles, there is space between the particles, particles are always moving at heat affects their movement, all particles in a pure substance are the same, pure particles are attracted to each other
What are hydraulics?
Liquids used to move objects with pressure
What are fluids?
Anything that flows, gas and liquids
Matter vs mass vs volume
Mass-something made up of particles volume-takes up space matter-anything w/ mass and volume
WHMIS acronym
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
WHMIS symbols
Biohazard, explosive, flammable, oxidizer, compressed gas, corrosive, poison, serious health hazard, less serious health hazard, may damage the environment
